| Tzivia Mindel is the daughter of Nira Mindel, one of three humans who hijacked a top-secret Air Force project (namely a spaceship) and blasted off into the galaxy. She was the creation of a very advanced alien race, who manipulated Nira’s DNA and caused her to become pregnant. The aliens did this for their own purpose, though, as they were dying, due to a disease that they could find no cure to, it is most likely that they did it to pass on their knowledge. And, indeed, Tzivia does have some of the collective knowledge of this alien race. Not all of it. Not even close. But she has some, and it has been her purpose since the day she was conceived to carry it. The aliens also manipulated her brain, so that she remembers everything she experiences. In effect, Tzivia does not have the luxury of forgetting anything. Though she rarely talks about it, she can remember everything from the minute she was born and (she thinks) a little before that. Nira was kept in a time dilation field with her crewmate Christopher Jameson for the duration of her pregnancy, and once Tzivia was born, the aliens returned them to their ship, which they had christened the Mivtsa. The rest of the crew—a motley bunch to say the least—were somewhat shocked, as no time had passed for them, but in general took the appearance of a baby in stride. Brygid Sutherland, in particular, a teenager, wise in the ways of the world and not so wise in being what Nira considered an upstanding citizen, took particular interest in Tzivia. While Nira was her mother and Chris her surrogate father (though she always referred to him as “Chris”), Tzivia was, in effect, raised by the whole crew, including an ex-slave, an ex-priestess, and an assassin. When Tzivia was five, Brygid was killed defending her, in a stand-off with the slave traders. Tzivia’s world threatened to collapse. But, with the help of the rest of the grieving crew, they managed to re-group and move on with their lives. A year later, Tzivia’s half-sister, Kat, was born. Tzivia doted on her little sister, much as Brygid had looked after her, and not just because having a younger child on the ship meant that Tzivia—a girl much too mature for her age—was treated with more respect. But, in the end, Tzivia was like her mother, who left her home in Israel to live in the United States and, finally, left planet Earth altogether, for good. When she was sixteen, Tzivia decided that she needed to strike out on her own. She had knowledge in her head—knowledge that she could only partially understand—she was still, in a way, grieving for Brygid, and she wanted to find a more complete picture of herself. So, despite her mother’s protests, she left the Mivtsa on Brygid’s ship, the Hoshi. Tzivia then spent the next few years traveling through space, surviving, and looking for something that she didn’t even know she was searching for. Once, she found someone like her—carrying memories from the alien race that were most definitely not his. They met, talked, parted company, and she continued on. |
